Active Learning Is the Key to Effective Education
Today, the Open University of Kyzylorda hosted a methodological training seminar entitled “Active Learning Methods: Unlocking Students’ Potential” as part of an ongoing experience-sharing initiative. The seminar was conducted by Ultaі Yeshimova, PhD in Pedagogical Sciences. Faculty members of the university took part in the seminar, enhancing their professional skills and teaching practices.
The aim of the seminar was to jointly explore ways to make the learning process more engaging and effective, as well as to develop skills in planning interactive lessons. During the seminar, the question “Why are active learning methods important for students?” was presented for general discussion, and the differences between traditional and active learning were examined.
🔹 Traditional learning: the student is a passive listener
🔹 Active learning: the student is at the center of the learning process
🔹 Outcome: up to 90% information retention
🔹 Critical thinking development: teamwork skills are enhanced
The seminar discussed the application and effectiveness of methods such as Jigsaw, Think–Pair–Share, Case Study, Flipped Classroom, and Visual Learning (Scribing/Infographics). As a practical activity, the “information filtering” method was used to develop students’ information-processing skills.
At the end of the seminar, university faculty expressed their gratitude to Ultaі Yeshimova, highlighting the usefulness of the materials and their intention to implement the acquired knowledge in teaching practice.
