Honoring a Great Poet: An Inspiring Opera Evening
The Art Center hosted a performance of the opera Abai, dedicated to the 180th anniversary of the birth of the great Kazakh poet Abai Kunanbayuly. Students of the Open University of Kyzylorda attended the event, experiencing a powerful artistic evening that deepened their appreciation of national culture.
Based on a libretto by Mukhtar Auezov and composed by Akhmet Zhubanov and Latif Khamidi, Abai is far more than a love story or a simple conflict between good and evil. It is a profound artistic work that reflects the worldview of the Kazakh people, the richness of their character, and the philosophy of nomadic life. The opera’s tragic truth and spiritual depth captivate the audience and spark thoughtful reflection.
The evening’s musical atmosphere was masterfully shaped by conductor Rustam Rysmambetov, laureate of international and national competitions. The regional symphony orchestra delivered an outstanding performance under the leadership of its artistic director and chief conductor, Professor Musilim Amze — honored artist of Kazakhstan.
The production was further enriched by the creative work of stage director Aziza Izdikulova, recipient of the “Excellence in Culture” badge and the “For Distinguished Service” medal. Her artistic vision and directorial decisions brought freshness to the performance and revealed new layers of meaning in the portrayal of Abai.
Our students who attended the event deeply felt the spiritual legacy of the great poet, witnessed a remarkable example of national art, and returned truly inspired.
