Oxford Qazaq Dictionary

On February 23, 2024, the presentation of the Oxford Qazaq Dictionary, translated into Kazakh-English, English-Kazakh for the first time in the country, took place at the Kyzylorda Open University and Kyzylorda higher multidisciplinary college.

The event was opened by the head of the Department for Academic Affairs Aisulu Mukhambetzhanovna, who shared information about the Oxford Qazaq Dictionary.

The first edition of the Kazakh-English and English-Kazakh OXFORD dictionary with a total volume of 1362 pages, covering 60 thousand words, was prepared by the International Society "Kazakh Tili" on behalf of the president of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

The world-famous Oxford University Press has given official permission to publish the bilingual Oxford Qazaq Dictionary. Specialists of the Institute of Linguistics named after Akhmet Baitursynov took part in the improvement of the dictionary and passed the examination of the Academic Council of the dictionary Institute.
In the development of the dictionary, the methodology and technology of compiling the world-famous Oxford English Dictionary are taken as a basis. The compilation work has been continuous for four years, it was attended by more than 50 experienced correspondents specializing in the vocabulary of the Kazakh and English languages.

As part of the compilation of the dictionary, phrases from the Kazakh and English vocabulary in the field of Culture, Information Technology, medicine, economics, finance and trade were introduced.

The event was attended by students and teachers. Gulnar Zharkenov, a teacher of history and law, spoke at the meeting:
- This dictionary has a high value, it uses a rich fund of the Kazakh language. This dictionary will be another foundation for the preservation of our language. A new initiative of Kazakhstan in the period of digitalization,- he expressed his opinion.

Students of the specialty "veterinary medicine" of the Kyzylorda higher multidisciplinary college Meirambekova Mahabbat, Pirali Yernur got acquainted with the Oxford Qazaq Dictionary and were satisfied with the rich magulmat.
In addition, Zhanel Nurlanovna, a student of the specialty "design" of the Kyzylorda Open University, Nurailym Yerbolatova, a student of the specialty "Informatics", expressed their opinion about the dictionary in English and invited students to learn the language, use the dictionary in the educational process.

The Librarian of the college Yegizbaeva Aigul spoke about the features of the Oxford Qazag dictionary. It indicated samples of writing sms messages, an application for employment, a preliminary receipt of a hotel room or a refusal request, and comparative grammar of the two languages.

We express confidence that this dictionary will become a reliable companion of teachers and students in the future, will make a significant contribution to the preservation and development of the national language and culture.
